DANUBE FLOOD CONTROL AGENCY (DHK)

The Danube Flood Control Agency was founded in 1927 as the legal successor of the “Donau-Regulierungs-Comission” (the Danube Regulation Commission which was responsible for carrying out the first big regulation of the Danube) to maintain protection and dyke structures built under the Danube regulation legislation. The federal authorities, the province of Lower Austria and the City of Vienna are all represented in the Agency while via donau acts as its managing body.

By law, the Danube Flood Control Agency is responsible for:

  • Maintaining flood control and dyke structures along the Danube, from the point where the River Isper joins the Danube to the national border at Theben
  • Operating and administrating the associated facilities and surface areas
  • Maintaining the Danube canal and maintaining and operating the weir and the lock at Nußdorf
  • Administrating the Danube Flood Control Agency real estate (these are the pieces of land co-owned by the federal authorities, the province of Lower Austria and the City of Vienna.
