STRUCTURE

via donau provides an efficient and reliable infrastructure on the Danube waterway. In cooperation with national and international partners from all over Europe via donau works on modernising, greening and increasing the use of navigation on the Danube. The company aims at acting as a strong business partner.

via donau is also responsible for numerous ecological river-engineering and re-naturalisation projects. These restore the river to its natural run and create new habitats for animals and plants. In order to protect the population from floods, via donau builds and operates flood control dykes and structures and performs important flood control functions in Vienna and Lower Austria.

via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft mbH was founded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology on 1 January 2005 and tasked with the preservation and development of the Danube waterway.

via donau is fully owned by the Republic of Austria. Its tasks and duties are stipulated in the Waterways Act of 2004 (Federal Law Gazette 177/2004 of 30.12.2004).
