WASTEMANAGEMENT

The historical and technical developments of the last decades have turned the river Danube into an ever more important international waterway. Even though inland waterway transport is environmentally friendly compared to other transport modes, concepts on avoiding the negative effects of an increased transport volume are needed. Eco-friendly waste disposal solutions make an important contribution to saving resources as well as to avoiding the contamination of soil, air and water.

The waste materials generated onboard vessels can be divided into three main groups:

  • Waste generated by the operation of the vessel. These include bilge water – a mixture of water and oil from the engine room – and the waste oil generated onboard.
  • Household waste (e.g. residual waste, recyclables, wastewater and sludge)
  • Cargo waste (cargo residues, washing water)
