As part of its transport development tasks, via donau advises interested shippers and forwarders on all possibilities of inland waterway transport. In addition, via donau constitutes the main source of information about funding schemes and EU grants for sustainable improvements in Danube navigation.

What is more, via donau focuses on the implementation of new services for inland navigation which shall be integrated into intermodal logistics chains to a much greater extent in future. To achieve this target, however, existing potentials have to be analysed and know-how on sectors and transportation goods has to be accumulated. A recent example for via donau's efforts in this field is the building of fundamental know-how concerning the introduction of scheduled container transport services on the Danube. Finally, via donau also supports ports in implementing expansion or construction plans and enhancing their service offer.
