via donau presented CREATING research results on environmental performance of inland navigation

The results of the successful research project CREATING were presented at the CREATING Final Conference 14 June in Rotterdam/ The Netherlands and the European Inland Waterway Navigation (EIWN) Conference 27-29 June in Visegrád/Hungary.

CREATING – Concepts to Reduce Environmental impact and Attain optimal Transport performance by Inland NaviGation – which started 2004, is a successful European research project in the 6th Framework Program of the European Commission. The aim of the project is to stimulate waterborne transport by innovative logistic solutions in an economical way combined with giving new impulses to inland navigation with respect to safety and environment.

Within CREATING, innovative solutions have been developed to strengthen the performance of inland navigation in terms of logistics, safety and environment. The outcome of the project represents a contribution to enhance the integration of inland navigation into European logistics chains and its competitiveness as safe and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The CREATING team comprises 27 partners in Europe existing of research institutes, governmental organizations, universities, shipyards and branch organizations of shippers, ship owners and ship builders.

Work Package 6 - Environmental Impact - was lead by Petra Seiwerth, Senior Project Manager at via donau’s Department of Technology Projects Inland Navigation. The research on environmental impact concentrated on emission reduction: Conventional as well as new vessel engine technologies were examined with regard to their emission reduction potential. Based on these results concrete measures are recommended to policy makers and the inland waterway transport sector.

Technical expert Juha Schweighofer, Senior Project Manager at via donau’s Department of Technology Projects Inland Navigation, and Petra Seiwerth summarized the results of the analysis of the environmental performance of vessel engines and the potentials for improvement in a conference paper published in the proceedings of this year’s European Inland Waterway Navigation (EIWN) Conference 27-29 June, in Visegrád, Hungary. The key results of Work Package 6 – Environmental Impact – were presented at the CREATING Final Conference, which took place on 14 June 2007 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and at the EIWN 2007 Conference in Hungary.
