Third Austrian Day of the Waterway shows clear commitment to the environment-friendly transport route Danube

The 3rd Austrian Day of the Waterway took place mid May on board the Regina Danubia under the motto „The Danube connects“. The event, organised by the Österreichischen Wasserstraßen- und Schifffahrtsverein (ÖWSV) emphasized the economic and ecological advantages of the European inland navigation and herewith put the Danube waterway as main focus of the event.

Representatives from the field of domestic and foreign logistics, industry experts, port and vessel operators as well as political decision-makers and representatives of navigation authorities agreed that the Danube represents a powerful and ecologically sound transport route. The significance of the development and expansion projects for the valorisation of the Danube waterway that has been put forward and notably emphasized.  

Dr. Johannes Eigner, Head of the Department „EU-enlargement“ in the Austrian Foreign Ministry and Adriana Stanescu, Envoy and chargé d’affaire of the Romanian Embassy in Austria, underlined in their keynote speeches the importance of the development of inland navigation for an environmentally sound tackling of the constantly rising transport volumes of East-West-transit.  

Furthermore, Dr. Siegmar Hanser, President of the ÖWSV also brought out the economic advantages of inland navigation and therefore of the Danube as Trans-European Waterway.
