All river engineering measures scheduled for the Integrated River Engineering Project East of Vienna are to be realised during this pilot project in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. Along this 3 km-long project stretch, all initial measures will be implemented simultaneously. These will include riverbank renaturation, optimisation of low water regulations, granulometric riverbed improvement, as well as the re-connection of a side arm.
This pilot project will not only serve as a test run for hydraulic engineering and construction operations processes, but also for the development and testing of all necessary technical and ecological assessment procedures. It has been developed as an integral part of the development plans of the Integrated River Engineering Project and follows an integrated planning approach. The intention hereby is to implement the planning principles of the interdisciplinary steering committee and in doing so learn incrementally from the river.
