Inland navigation is cost-effective for the movement of high volume and bulk freight, more fuel efficient per cargo ton kilometre, and is a vital alternative transportation mode in order to reduce congestion and improve air quality. Barge to Business thus provides a unique opportunity to learn about the latest technologies, innovative solutions offered in the sector, to discuss with experts the integration of specialised services, and to showcase success stories on transport and logistics in Europe. Encouraging networks between industry and inland waterway navigation as well as to guarantee a solid policy platform for a better positioning of IWT in Europe is the declared objective of this event.
The upcoming conference hopes to bring together suppliers, barge owners, waterway administrators, inland waterway service providers, politicians and policy makers.
While the first Barge to Business conference was focussed on inland waterway navigation in Belgium and the Netherlands, the second event in Vienna is dedicated to the Danube region and its great potential. The venue of Barge to Business 2012 seems as traditional and yet modern as inland navigation itself: the “Aula der Wissenschaften”, an elegant, historic yet technically state-of-the art venue, has always been a place to meet and to exchange ideas.
Barge to Business is based on two pillars: An information market offers the opportunity of showcasing and discussions on innovative concepts and technologies to inland waterway navigation. The second pillar, so-called “Danube River Dating” is a meeting platform for the facilitation of business contacts in prescheduled meetings in speed-dating style. It is a proven concept to bring together the supply and demand side as well as those interested in adding a bit of Danube water in their logistics mix.
The conference results from an initiative of the European platform for the implementation of NAIADES, the Platina project - an initiative to enhance the use of inland navigation as part of intermodal freight solutions. Platina is supported and funded by the European Commission.
