The Team Transport Development of via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßengesellschaft offers its services to interested companies and acts as a neutral information platform for efficient transport and logistics solutions. The offer includes logistics consulting regarding current trends in liner services for container and RoRo-transport (roll-on/roll-off: a type of transport which allows cargoes to be driven or rolled on a vessel via a ramp), port development programmes both in Austria and Southeastern Europe as well as national and international funding programmes and project opportunities.
Team leader Gerhard Gussmagg says, "Companies appreciate having a central contact point at their disposal where they can obtain all the basic information they require as well as the right sector contacts to set up Danube logistics solutions".
Today, inland waterway transport has established itself as a highly ecofriendly, safe, and efficient mode of transport. Additionally, the increased use of rivers and canals is fully in line with the objectives of European transport and environmental policies.
Interest in Danube river navigation is on the rise in German-speaking countries
The Transport Development Team received more than 300 requests for information in 2009. Inquiries have more than tripled since 2005, with half of them originating in Austria. As a result, it is mostly Austrian businesses which benefit from the know-how offered by via donau. Germany, Austria's most important trading partner, accounts for approximately 18% of all inquiries. In total, inquiries from these two countries represent more than two thirds (68%) of all requests for information. The remaining inquiries came from 33 different countries including Australia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the USA.
Requests for information by freight forwarders and shippers at the top of all inquiries
Logistics companies and carriers as well as well as manufacturers and cargo owners are increasingly seeking information regarding prospective transport on the ecofriendly Danube axis. These two categories of companies account for two thirds (68%) of all inquiries, a result of the increasing business of Austrian companies in Southeastern Europe.
