On April 11 2011, the Danube Commission organized and hosted the first RIS Workshop “Application of River Information Services (RIS) in the Danube Navigation” in Budapest, Hungary. The objective of this workshop was to exchange experiences regarding RIS among the different European countries and experts.
About 60 participants joined the meeting to learn more about the state-of-the-art and future of River Information Services in Danube area and throughout Europe. Besides all Member States of the Danube Commission (Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russian Federation) participants from the UNECE, Sava Commission, RIS Expert Groups Members, EU project representatives (RISING, IRIS EUROPE II, PLATINA, NEWADA), RIS Equipment producers and other experts were also among the participants.
Following status quo presentations from the Danube Commission, UNECE, PLATINA and other responsible administrations in the field of inland navigation such as Aquapol, commercial IWT operators represented by the inland vessel operator Fluvius provided insights on their daily experiences with RIS and prospect requirements for the future. Future RIS Services for transport logistics, such as those being currently developed in the framework of the RISING project will support IWT operators in the areas of port management and optimisation of operation times and costs.
Several projects where via donau act as (lead) partner such as RISING, IRIS EUROPE II and NEWADA were presented by via donau experts giving the participants an overview of the projects and highlighting selected items and services.
The full day programme also included presentations by four RIS Expert Groups - VTT, ERI, NtS, Inland ECDIS as well as PIANC giving an outline of the RIS guidelines 2011.
According to the conclusions by the Danube Commission, until 2013 a majority of RIS services will be deployed on the Danube.
