The EU Project IRIS Europe 3 has now entered the starting phase. IRIS Europe 3 will significantly contribute to a harmonized RIS implementation at European level.
The ongoing project IRIS Europe 3 is the third project of its kind following IRIS Europe I (2006-2008) and IRIS Europe II (2009-2011). In essence, these projects are internationally coordinated projects of national priorities with clear focus on pilot implementations.
The main focus being further enhancement and fine-tuning of RIS key technologies and services as well as keeping up the good work started in the previous IRIS Europe projects. The involvement of logistics RIS users by means of pilot services and applications is another focus of this follow-up project.

The IRIS Europe initiative in a nutshell
IRIS Europe or “Implementation of River Information Services in Europe“ stems from an international initiative for the implementation of harmonized RIS services on European level. This project, supported by the European Commission within the TEN-T funding programme was driven by the objective to foster harmonised development and implementation of RIS on European level and focus on the enhancement of the RIS service portfolio to increase safety, efficiency and the environmental friendliness of inland navigation.
IRIS Europe I
IRIS Europe I was the first project of the IRIS Europe initiative and was executed by 8 Member States and 4 additional cooperation partners from 2006 to 2008. The project achieved the following main results:
IRIS Europe II
IRIS Europe II (2009-2011) was the second project within the IRIS Europe initiative and had the objective to expand the functionality of RIS and to pilot implement and evaluate infrastructure and services within the 9 participating Member States. Furthermore cooperation partners of 4 additional countries were involved. The main results of IRIS Europe II are:
