The EU Project IRIS Europe 3 has now entered the starting phase. IRIS Europe 3 will significantly contribute to a harmonized RIS implementation at European level.

IRIS Europe 3 is ready to start.

The ongoing project IRIS Europe 3 is the third project of its kind following IRIS Europe I (2006-2008) and IRIS Europe II (2009-2011). In essence, these projects are internationally coordinated projects of national priorities with clear focus on pilot implementations.

The main focus being further enhancement and fine-tuning of RIS key technologies and services as well as keeping up the good work started in the previous IRIS Europe projects. The involvement of logistics RIS users by means of pilot services and applications is another focus of this follow-up project.

The IRIS Europe 3 project objectives are the following:

  • The pilot implementation of new harmonised RIS services especially at the level of fairway, traffic and transport related RIS services
  • The implementation of services based on multilateral legal agreements (international RIS data exchange) and definitions of service levels for RIS
  • The provision of feedback and contribution to the maintenance and amendment of technical specifications and standards

The IRIS Europe initiative in a nutshell

IRIS Europe or “Implementation of River Information Services in Europe“ stems from an international initiative for the implementation of harmonized RIS services on European level. This project, supported by the European Commission within the TEN-T funding programme was driven by the objective to foster harmonised development and implementation of RIS on European level and focus on the enhancement of the RIS service portfolio to increase safety, efficiency and the environmental friendliness of inland navigation.

IRIS Europe I

IRIS Europe I was the first project of the IRIS Europe initiative and was executed by 8 Member States and 4 additional cooperation partners from 2006 to 2008. The project achieved the following main results:

  • Specification and pilot implementation of cross border RIS data exchange
  • Pilot implementation of national infrastructure and services related to vessel tracking and tracing and electronic reporting
  • Investigation and pilot implementation of environmental services

IRIS Europe II

IRIS Europe II (2009-2011) was the second project within the IRIS Europe initiative and had the objective to expand the functionality of RIS and to pilot implement and evaluate infrastructure and services within the 9 participating Member States. Furthermore cooperation partners of 4 additional countries were involved. The main results of IRIS Europe II are:

  • Further development and pilot implementation of national and international data exchange providing services for logistical RIS users and authorities as well as interconnection to European services
  • Starting the definition of minimum quality requirements for RIS services and technologies.
  • Participation in standardisation of RIS services and technologies
  • Pilot Implementation of new RIS services and technologies and feasibility studies outlining future services for RIS

After three years the Project Management Team of IRIS Europe II proudly states that “the project was successfully executed and almost all planned results were achieved by the very actively contributing and motivated project partners”, says Mario Kaufmann, IRIS Europe 3 Project Coordinator at via donau.
