On 22 June, the PRO Austria Danube Day of the Waterway 2012 took place in Ybbs, Lower Austria. This event was an opportunity for the Austrian interest group to present itself after its relaunch. From logo to content - PRO Danube Austria (former Austrian Waterways and Shipping Office) has been redefined and has gained a younger and more dynamic image.
More than 50 participants accepted the invitation of PRO Danube Austria to the Day of the Waterway 2012 in Ybbs, Lower Austria. The opening speech was given by PRO Danube Austria President Christian Steindl who presented the three pillars upon which the reorganization of the association is now standing: infrastructure, modern fleet and internationalization. Steindl further explained that PRO Danube Austria will take an increased stand in these core subjects to better defend the interests of inland waterway transport in Austria as well to improve the existing framework conditions. The expertise and large network of its members can only benefit PRO Danube Austria and help increase the competitiveness of Danube Waterway Transport.
The great potential of the Danube River was further emphasized by Alexander Klacska, Chairman of the Transportation Division at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in his speech on under the motto "Hope for the Danube Waterway." Presentations by Danube expert Markus Simoner (via donau) and Andreas Dicke (Bavaria AG) introduced by LogServ Managing Director Christian Mokry updated the public on infrastructure issues. Furthermore, the potential for development of inland navigation on the Danube in the context of the Danube strategy of the European Union was presented by via donau Managing Director Hans-Peter Hasenbichler.
This highly successful event was rounded off with the theme "Engineering visions for a sustainable transport system: 40 years of PIANC in Austria," presented by the Preident of PIANC Austria Otto Schwetz and PIANC Austria Chair Reinhard Pfliegl. The PIANC Anniversary celebration was concluded by Hélène Gilkarov who introduced the Young Professionals section of PIANC Austria and the work that is being done on national and international level.
The event concluded with technical visits where the participants of the Day of the Waterway could choose between a sightseeing tour in the city of Ybbs or a visit of the headquarters of Schaufler GmbH an operations site for steel and metal recycling and waste recovery and disposal followed by a visit of the Stora Enso factory in Ybbs, "Europe's largest saw mill on the Danube".
