danube.news danube.news, Donauschifffahrt

From 23 to 27 September 2013, Liège (Belgium) and Maastricht (Netherlands) will host the 6th edition of the PIANC Smart Rivers Conference – Smart Rivers 2013. This biennial forum brings together professionals and experts involved in river transport from developing and developed countries to share their views and know-how on trends, policy, technology and science worldwide. As from 2011, Smart Rivers is placed under the umbrella of PIANC, the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure; this highly-anticipated event is being organized by the Netherlands and Belgium Sections of PIANC.

The Conference and Exhibition Smart Rivers 2013 will be held between 23 and 27 September in two cities Maastricht in the Netherlands, and Liège in Belgium. Although located in two countries, only one river runs through them, the Meuse. The first two days of the Conference will be dedicated for commissions and working group meetings, followed by two Conference days with presentation of papers in three parallel sessions. The PIANC SMART Rivers Conference 2013 will conclude with technical excursions to destinations in the Netherlands as well as Belgium and social events, giving the participants plenty of opportunities for networking.

The Smart Rivers Conference series started in 2005 as an initiative of major international organisations - among which via donau - in the field of Inland Waterway Transport to promote transport by barge. The first Conference was held in Pittsburgh and has since then been held alternatively in Europe and the US. via donau co-organized together with Austria Tech and TINA Vienna, the Smart Rivers 2009 edition in the Vienna City Hall. 7 years later, the preparatory works have started for Smart Rivers 2013 in Europe, following Smart Rivers 2011 in New Orleans.
