Title
WANDA - Waste Management for Inland Navigation on the Danube
Project objectives

The project WANDA aims at concerted development and exemplary implementation of preventive measures to ensure a sustainable, environmentally sound and transnationally coordinated approach in ship waste management along the Danube. In cross-border coordination stepwise a capable ship waste management system along the Danube shall be established.

Project survey

The project WANDA aims at concerted development and exemplary implementation of preventive measures to ensure a sustainable, environmentally sound and transnationally coordinated approach in ship waste management along the Danube. In cross-border coordination stepwise a capable ship waste management system along the Danube shall be established.

The project includes as main activities:

  • Within the project area harmonised national ship waste management concepts for all kind of ship waste - based on a common developed framework concept - are generated.
  • Coordinated implementation of selected pilot actions regarding collection and treatment of hazardous and other ship waste alongside the Danube River will be prepared.
  • For the purpose of the polluter pays principle as well as the environmental risk prevention an international financing model for charging the services of an operative system for the collection and treatment of oily and greasy ship waste will be elaborated.

Within WANDA there are 9 partner from 7 countries involved (AT, SK, HU, HR, SRB, RO, BG). To harmonise preparation and implementation of the project activities different coordination mechanisms like expert networks, feedback processes and workshops including participants from the Danube Commission (DC) and Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (CCNR) will be established.

Role of
via donau

As lead partner, via donau is responsible for the overall coordination of the WANDA project. via donau leads WP1 “Transnational Project Management and Coordination”, WP 2 “Project Communication and Dissemination” as well as WP 5 “Development of a financing model for oily and greasy ship waste”. Additionally, via donau is responsible for the activities 4.1 (planning pilot implementation) and 6.3 (coordination of the financing model with DE, Middle and Lower Danube countries).
