One of the River Information Services' (RIS) main tasks consists in the electronic position recording of all vessels in the system and their display on an electronic navigational chart, known as the Inland ECDIS.

This task is achieved via the efficient use of satellite positioning, radio data transmission and adjusted visualisation. The River Information Services system provides continuous traffic and navigational safety information thus assisting skippers in making their nautical decisions and enhancing safety on the river Danube.

Thanks to further electronic data processing in the DoRIS system, the supervision and control of dangerous goods transports as well as the co-ordination of emergency services teams in the event of accidents are greatly facilitated.

In addition, stored data can always be retrieved from a central database for the reconstruction of accidents.
