Among the many different infrastructure maintenance tasks of via donau are the regular support and maintenance of the international Danube waterway and related installations and flood protection facilities. This work is performed on site by via donau’s branches at the locations Aschach, Krems and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. The branches are the primary points of contact for municipalities and citizens, and guarantee the balance of interests on the Danube, March and Thaya.
The local teams responsible for engineering conduct monthly measurements of the riverbed and in phases of low water, every week. The planning, organisation and surveillance of dredging to maintain navigation for large ships belong to its responsibilities as well as tasks such as the restoration of damages caused by flooding and oversight of the waters. These branches are also responsible in many projects for the ecological improvement of the Danube habitat – such as projects for the renaturalisation of riverbanks and reinstating the linkage of old arms of the river under the Life projects.
The branches oversight of routes and dams means that they conduct regular checks of properties, flood protection installations and man-made structures owned by via donau or DHK. They determine if damages have been sustained and take any necessary steps to repair the damages. The maintenance of the riverbank is part of the task just like the upkeep and checking of the footpaths along the Danube used mostly as bicycle paths.
The Mobile Service of the branches of via donau is an additional mobile, flexible team that conducts preservation and restoration work along the riverbanks and dams of the Danube, March and Thaya Rivers.
