The Danube as an international waterway is at the centre of the tasks and duties of via donau. Our aim is to ensure customer-oriented infrastructure management by using innovative and environmentally compatible technologies.

Our tasks range from the maintenance of the river banks and bank structures to the bathymetry, maintenance and improvement of the fairway and the operation of the nine Austrian Danube locks.

Inland waterway transport can only be competitive and offer environmentally friendly and cost-efficient transport solutions if it is based on an efficient and modern infrastructure.

The strengthening of waterway transport is a declared objective of the transport policy of Austria and the European Union. via donau pursues this objective through the National Action Plan Danube Navigation and through international cooperation.
